To be or not to be. That is the question…. A trivial question from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, yes? A trivial question from a Donor to a Vampyre, not so much.
Vampyre’s feeding…. Your mind races to strobe-lit images of beautiful women covered in blood, sex and music, lustful eyes, your nerves stand on end, echoes of moans and sounds of pleasure… This is where the fictional movie rudely disappoints – there’s nothing that glamorous asking someone for some of their blood. But it’s our lot as sanguines to depend on those that are willing, or to resort to meat-blood.
Picking a Donor, or at least coming to an understanding with one, doesn’t happen often – but when it does, the angels sing, the planets align, and we feed. But even something as simple as feeding turns out to be a lot more complex than one would expect, and that complexity must be taken as seriously as life and death. Continue reading
It seems that the ‘hot topic’ of the moment in the wide VC is ELDERS….who are they? What are they? How do we know who they are? And should we care? Continue reading
Like most of the culture we in the Vampyre subculture in South Africa have inherited, the system by which we categorize Donors came from the culture of the eastern USA, specifically the New York area. Recently, some members of the SAVA came together to re-evaluate the terminology inherited from overseas and decided to find something more unique to suit our local community. Continue reading
The Atlanta Vampire Alliance has put out a warning about journalists conducting “sting operations” in which they arrange for someone to pose as a potential donor for a Vampyre, and when they meet for the first time, they are secretly filmed discussing the details of their interaction. Throughout my tenure in the Vampire Community, both online and off, there has been several debates raging in the dark… None, to me as a Sanguine Vampire, are more important than the “Donor versus Vampire” debate… It has been a major struggle to even get Donors recognized in many Houses/Clans/Covens/Orders who are “followers of the olde guard”… (insert sarcastic smile here please)… Continue reading
Community figures and House leaders indulging in public tirades in forums and on Facebook, as has come to light in another example yesterday, belittling donors and promoting such a view of donors as “food, blood-bags, and cattle” etc for Vampyres reinforces the notion that donors are lesser, not only than Vampyres, but also lesser as people, and are not to be considered deserving of being protected from abuses and affronts to their dignity within the Vampyre Community. Some friends of Vampyres wonder what it is about vamps that expects them to become donors, to give a small amount of their blood for them to consume, and even to feel guilty for not doing it? Well, I can’t expect someone to feel guilty about being afraid of a needle or other sharp object, or for not wanting to get emotionally or physically close to me – but what I do find objectionable on the part of a friend, is someone who watches me starve, grow tired and weak and even become sick – and then cheerfully looks me in the eyes and says “I’m sorry”. Is that a friend? Though I will not bear a grudge, this is the question I find myself asking these days. Today I take a closer look at the Vampyre-Donor issue in our local context. Continue reading
